The design of the VG Compact is a hybrid of the VG-4 and VG-5 safety gears. The linkage mechanism from the VG-5 has been fitted into a VG-4 sized frame. The brake can be fitted with either of the spring stacks from the VG-5. One spring stack is used for a safety gear acting in the “down” direction and the other when the safety gear is inverted acts as an “upward acting brake”.

With its reduced weight the safety gear is easy to install as it can be managed by a single engineer. Its reduced dimensions also make it ideal for shallow pit depths which have in the past caused problems.
